Despite his lifelong bond with his first wife, I’ll always think of Ali MacGraw as McQueen’s woman. From all I’ve read, the two got into some nasty arguments, but there was a passion there that you can feel just watching The Getaway. My hunch is that they were two people who loved one another and never quite knew how to express it properly when life got tough.

Yes, ask me who was McQueen’s wife, and I would struggle to think of the other names besides Ali MacGraw. It’s one of those epic love stories that you just don’t see in today’s Hollywood. Or maybe we have all just romanticized their relationship a little too much.

That was Ali MacGraw’s third marriage, and Steve’s second. However in her autobiography Ali said she still loved Steve in death, and felt a connection to him that she didn’t with her first and second husbands (her marriage to Steve lasted longe than both the other two combined).
